tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is proven to be effective at fighting acne. This oil has very powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves of the Alternofalfia tree found in Australia. Before, these leaves

were used as a cure for athlete’s foot, bad breath, and body odor. Now, however, they have started to make a name in the industry that fights off acne. In fact, tea tree is said to be the next “benzoyl peroxide” in terms of popularity among users.

However, there are still doubts on tea tree oil acne remedy’s efficiency as an anti-acne treatment. Some say that it can cure acne, while others say it can only manage the symptoms but not deal with the root cause. It pains me to say this, but the latter is actually correct. Unfortunately, acne cannot be cured by the topical application of tea tree oil as it needs to be treated from the inside out.

But you need not throw away your tea tree oil just yet because like I said, it is still effective in controlling the symptoms of acne. That means it can lessen redness and inflammation; and it also kills the bacteria that causes more severe acne breakouts. Here are the steps you can follow when using tea tree oil for acne:

Tea Tree Oil For Acne

  1. Remember that pure tea tree oil is very strong and may cause an allergic reaction if placed directly on the skin; thus, you need to dilute it depending on your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, take a tablespoon of tea tree oil and mix it with 9 tablespoons of water. If your skin is a little sensitive mix the tea tree oil with aloe vera gel instead of water. The gel will neutralize the chemical reactions to make sure you do not develop rashes.
  2. Before you use the tea tree solution, wash your face with a mild cleanser first. With a cotton ball, apply the solution to form a thin layer on your skin. When it’s dry, put on a moisturizer (preferably oil-free). Do that before you go to bed too.
  3. Experiment with tea tree oil for acne. Add a few more drops when you feel like your skin is reacting well to the solution. But if you notice some redness, dilute the oil a bit until you get the perfect solution.
  4. Once or twice a week, make a tea tree oil mask so you can control acne breakouts more effectively. Get a hypoallergenic green clay powder and add two or three drops of the tree oil. Pour water on  (little by little) until the solution turns in to a paste. Use the mixture as a facial mask and you are set.

Acne breakouts can be devastating. But now, you have what it takes to minimize them and hopefully have a way to stop those nasty breakouts too. You can always find more home remedies for acne if this one doesn’t suit you.

  3. Just wanted to know where can I purchase Tea Tree Oil? Also what kind of moisturizers are there that will also prevent acne breakouts plus help remove exsisting scars?

  4. Hi LaMara, you can get Tea Tree Oil in the supermarket. :) Anyway, i’m not sure which specific brand of moisturizer can help prevent acne breakouts and remove acne scars because i do not use one myself. My skin is naturally oily and using moisturizer will only worsen my problem with pimples. I will ask around and get back to you on this. You just gave me an idea for my next article. :)

  5. I have heard fr0m many friends that– Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion works for them! i have yet to try it out myself though..

  6. I’ve used Tea Tree Oil as a remedy and I don’t dilute it at all (although, I was told too). It has never caused a rash on my skin but I only apply it to pimples and not to unaffected areas. It works very well, it brings down the size and redness of pimples within hours :)

  7. @Julija – have not tried that one too. Let us know if it worked for you. :)

@Jamie: Good for you! :) There are some skin types that has an instant chemical reaction to tea tree oil. The trick is to try it on a small surface of your skin first. :)

  8. I’ve used the tea tree oil for a while now, and I don’t dilute it either, but I do have a question about the mask..

So I just go to a store such as Walmart and get the green clay powder? And I only use the green clay powder and oil..no water or anything?

    Thanks for the great tip!

  10. i just had a baby 1 month ago and now experiencing severe acne, mainly aeround my chin area near my cheeks. I have tried a lot of things that seem to not work. I have never had a reaction like what I am experiencing now. I would really like to know if these nasty scars will go away and what can I use tto clear them up as well as the painful acne?

    Thank you so much,

    Dionne

  11. Dear gemma,
As long as u suffered from acne for a very long time and nothing worked well, u should start using benzoyl peroxide gel ( BENZAC AC), but u should be very careful when using it because it is very strong and also bleaches colored fabrics and hair, so it must only be applied accurately on the pimple itself. Avoid appliying on the healthy skin.. but the results are magical. However, i advice consulting a dermatologist before dealing with such strong treatments. If still didnt work, ur only getaway is taking pills.. GOOD LUCK ANYWAY!

    Dear Dionne,
it is very preferred that pregnant women and women wha have recently had babies should not use acne treatment products, however i advice u replace the normal soaps u use to clean ur face with neutrogena grapefruit ( preferably scrub containing tiny pebbles) wash, and it will help reduce your acne. i have aslo been using clean and clear advantage as my daily wash, and it helped reduce those dark acne spots, and reduce redness and inflammation, but still didnt stop acne from coming out. I REALLY THINK UR PROBLEM NEEDS ACNE WASHES, BUT TRUST ME IT WILL GO AWAY! GOOD LUCK.

  12. Hi, I am getting so ennoyed with my face!!! but I was wondering if rosemary “water” works for acne?

  13. @Ava:

“My skin is naturally oily and using moisturizer will only worsen my problem with pimples.”

This is a very common myth, but could not be further from the truth my dear! Moisture is the key to radiant skin. Without it, your skin will feel deprived of moisture and will work overtime to produce more oil! Sebaceous glands produce sebum which gets trapped in your pores, oxidizes and creates blackheads and acne pimples. The key to getting rid of your acne problem is to slough off dead cells (I love using your baking soda remedy) and to reduce production of sebum. This is why a good moisturizer is key! I have very oily skin and yet still manage to have a few rough dry patches. So my favourite moisturizer is Dormer 211. I use both the cream and the lotion. The thick cream allows for the best localized moisture retention, whereas the lotion is perfect for all over your face.

    Straight from the Dormer website:

“Unsurpassed in skin care…incorporates an exclusive high molecular weight HYALURONIC ACID COMPLEX that provides protective, flexible, moisture retaining uniform matrices that interact with the skin resulting in:

Helping protect the skin from environmental attack (climatic, pollutants, etc.)
Superior skin softening, smoothening, lubricating and elasticity activity.
The addition of other unique skin conditioning ingredients and a Phospholipid (Lecithin):
Helps replenish and locks-in moisture to restore the skin’s natural moisture balance.
Helps reverse the signs of aging skin.

Non comedogenic, hypo allergenic and fragrance free. Contains Vitamin E & B factor. Helps reduce sun burn symptoms. Light texture, non greasy. ”

As for price, it is about $15 dollars per bottle, but they are quite large, and last a long time because you don’t have to use much at all. The cream and lotion together last me about 6 months so my yearly cost is about $60. But you can use one or both. It all depends on your skin’s needs. Dormer also has creams with SPF in them, but I have yet to try them yet.

It is my go to moisturizer for sure! I also use a medicated moisturizer every once in a while for an overnight pick me up. However if Dormer 211 isn’t the moisturizer for you, find one that is oil-free and non-comodogenic. I hope this helps everyone out and clears up some common misconceptions!

Good luck on your quest to clear skin!

  14. In what department can I find green clay powder@ walmart?

  15. So I’ve been using the tea tree oil with aloe vera gel as a face mask in a rough 1:5 ratio overnight for 3 consecutive nights and it has made my pimples swell down drastically. Thank you so much!!! Can i continue using it everyday, or should i take a few nights off to see how it goes? Because I’m scared if i use it everyday that it won’t be as effective in the future :(

  16. rawr!

  17. I always had clear skin. But when I turned 45, I started getting acne, especially around “that time” of th month. Someone told me about Tree Tea oil, so I thought I would give it a try. I had this very large cystic pimple and a few small ones on my cheek are. I started using the Tea Tree oil and after a couple a days, my face started clearing up tremendously. The large pimple reduced and redness went away. Tea Tree oil really works and I will be incorporating it into my skin regimine!

  20. Dear Ava,

I am suffering from acne since 5yrs i tried a lot of natural remedies and consulted many dermatologists but the treatment which they give cures my acne only for a few days again it starts coming back i am very upset with it and now my whole face has become very horrible with big pimples and scars so i suggest you give me some guidance and help me out….

    Regards:

  21. dermatologist…

  22. I just tried using tea tree oil and didn’t dilute Before I used it my acne was extremely red and sore.I just applied it to effected areas with a cotton ball. I hope this okay. It took the soreness away. Should I continue using this method or not? Thankyou..

  23. I reckon tea tree oil must work because ive been using a natural acne treatment by mama nature that has tea tree oil in it. Its also got manuka oil and jojoba oil and others natural stuff. I must admit it costs a fortune and it caused a worse break out for a couple of days after using it but then my acne settled right down and gradually went away. I still get the odd breakout mostly on my chin but I can live with that. This is not an overnight wonder but it does seem to gradually clear the skin and my skin is nowhere near as oily.
